March 2018 – Present
Volunteer Position – Website Coordinator
As a founding member of the Society of Military Spouses in STEM, I was excited to give back to this fantastic organization. SMSS connects military spouses in STEM career fields with employers and resources. When I joined SMSS as the volunteer website coordinator the most pressing concern was website security. I implemented more secure password requirements as well as improving the security of the website.
The website’s load time was also in need of improvement. Through a combination of caching, removing unused and outdated plugins and upgrading the website design and theme the site’s load time was reduced to under 3 seconds, a vast improvement from an initial load time which ranged to over 10 seconds.
The site’s theme was upgraded to Education Pro from Genesis, with customizations to meet branding needs. This theme was chosen due to its similarity with the original website design, theme quality. The new design was done with heavy budget and time constraints to get the website in the best form for an upcoming event. The new site was completed with days to spare.
On a regular basis, I perform monthly maintenance tasks, including backups and updates of WordPress, themes, and plugins. Site changes, updates, and additions are performed as required or needed. I report directly to the Directors of Operations, Outreach, and Engagement.
SMSS is still seeking volunteers as well as sponsors and is accepting new members. If you’d like to get involved learn more here!
